Unable to Access Outlook.pst
MS Outlook users often rely very heavily on Outlook for their e-mail needs. When Outlook fails to open or function correctly, this can create a very stressful situation. Fortunately, the user is shown an error message which will identify the reason Outlook will not open. One of the more common error messages is:
Error Code: 0×0040116 cannot access Outlook.pst
This error message indicates that there is a problem with the Outlook PST file. The PST file stores all of the e-mails and personal data of the Outlook user. This error message is most likely to occur when the PST file grows larger than 2GB. Users can verity the size of the file by checking its properties.
The first step is to reduce the size of the PST file below 2GB. Microsoft provides a utility on their website for this task. Download and run the Pst2gb.exe utility. Reducing the size will not correct the damage. It will enable the Scanpst.exe utility to run successfully. The Scanpst.exe utility can repair the PST file and is located at:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033
Open Scanpst.exe and browse to the PST file. Click Scan and the utility will identify errors and attempt to repair them. In many cases, this will resolve the issue. When Outlook continues to present the error, a third party Outlook PST Repair tool will be required to fully restore access to MS Outlook.
