Compatibility Error Upgrading Outlook 2007

Most users decide to upgrade their previous versions of MS Outlook to Outlook 2007 because of the enhanced features and capabilities of the newer version.  In most cases this upgrade process proceeds without any issues.  In some cases, however, users discover the upgrade did not complete successfully when they attempt to open Outlook 2007 for the first time and are presented with the error:

The crypt32.dll file is not compatible with Outlook 2007

The crypt32.dll file is a critical MS Outlook file.  It enables the information stored in the PST file to be properly displayed in MS Outlook.  When the crypt32.dll file is damaged, corruption of data in the PST file also occurs.

The first step in resolving this issue is to replace the damaged crypt32.dll file.  This can be accomplished repairing the installation of MS Outlook 2007 from the Add or Remove Programs utility in the Windows operating system.  Uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook 2007 will also replace the damaged crypt32.dll file.

The next step is to repair the Outlook PST file.  This requires the user to run Scanpst.exe found in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

When the Scanpst.exe utility is running, browse to the damaged PST file and click the Scan button.  This will begin the process of finding and repairing corrupted data in the PST file.  If Outlook 2007 is still unable to open, a third party Outlook PST Repair utility will be necessary to complete the process.
